The Uluit: Champions of the North

The first episode introduces Rita, Alascie and their older sister Anna. Rita is captain of the Uluit women’s hockey team in Inukjuak, while Alascie is assistant captain. Anna supports her two sisters and reflects on family history, including the story of her daughter Rita Lucy, a former team member sentenced to several months in prison.

The second episode profiles Brenda, one of Nunavik’s first Inuit midwives. It also follows Laura, a player who has to leave the team because she is pregnant with her third child. The episode shows the team organizing a ceremony in memory of a former teammate who died tragically in a fire, and concludes with Rita Lucy’s release from prison.

This episode continues the series’ exploration of the lives of the Uluit in a northern community where Inuit traditions coexist with the realities of the modern world. Through the players’ daily lives, hockey becomes a space for gathering, resilience and affirmation for women who contribute deeply to their community.

This episode highlights the pride, energy and determination of the team’s young women. Between family responsibilities, social challenges and the desire to fulfill themselves, the players affirm their identity and their place in the community, both on the ice and in everyday life.

In the final episode, the Uluit travel to the Great Whale Hockey Cup, the culmination of their journey. The competition becomes more than a tournament: it represents the result of a year of effort, solidarity and perseverance for women who proudly carry the hopes of their team and community.
